All About The Porsche 365

The Porsche 356 is the first Porsche production automobile and it was sold from 1948 through 1965. Although many consider Porsche 64 as being the first automobile produced by the German company, the 64 was never mass-produced and it was only a drivable test-mule. The 364 was created by Ferdinand Porsche and his son, Ferry Porsche, designed by Erwin Komenda and its engine features derived from the Volkswagen Beetle, deigned by Mr. Porsche Senior.

The models available were initially coupe, cabriolet (luxury convertible) and then roadster (a stripped down convertible). Before being withdrawn in 1965, it went through several changes. The most desirable versions were 356 “Carrera” (often sold for well over $150,000), “Super 90″ and “Speedster”. In the late 50`s, the original selling price for a Porsche was $4,000.

In 1954, Max Hoffman, the only importer of Porsches into United States needed a lower cost, racier version for the American marker. Therefore, the company created 356 “Speedster” that became a instant hit thanks to the low, raked windshield (easily removable for weekend racing), bucket seats, and minimal folding top. These days, this car is still very appreciated as it is sold for over $100,000 and it has been used in several films, including 48 Hours, its sequel – Another 48 Hours and Top Gun. In 1957, the production of Speedster peaked at 1,171 cars. In 1959 it was replaced by the Convertible D model, which featured a taller, more practical windshield, glass side windows, and more comfortable seats.

Year after year, the basic shape of Porsche 356 remained the same and was easily recognized and remarked, even though changes were made, especially in the mechanical area. Coupe and cabriolet models were produced every year up to 1965, with the last 356B Roadster built in early 1963. The final model build was 356 C that featured disc brakes and the most powerful pushrod engine Porsche so far: the 95HP “SC”.

In the year that Porsche launched 911, 1964, Porsche 356 production peaked at 14,151 cars. Still, the company continued to sell the 356C in North America through the end of 1965 as a lower-cost vehicle. When the customers complained the price for 911 was too high (almost twice the price of the 356), Porsche started producing the 912, using the 356 engine. The 912model was sold between 1965 and 1969. 56 years after the beginning of the production, Sports Car

International named 356C number ten on the list of Top Sports cars of the 60`s. Today, the 356 is a respected car among the collectors, as it stood the test of time. Worldwide, thousands of 356 owners maintain the tradition, preserving their cars and driving them regularly.

Ferrari Enzo

Ferrari Enzo is a one of the true supercars made by Ferrari.

Born on 20 February 1898 in Modena, Italy, Enzo Ferrari received very basic education, but had a passion for racing cars. Enzo started of as a mule-shoe fitter with the Italian Army, but his constant sickness due to the widespread Italian flu, he was discharged from the Italian Military services. His family business collapsed and he had no choice, but to seek a job.

Enzo tried to find work with FIAT, but settled for a smaller car company “CMN”.CMN dealt with the manufacturing of passenger cars using old truck bodies. Enzo’s long pursued racing dream finally came true, when he started racing with the CMN racing team in the year 1919 and achieved little success.

After leaving CMN in 1920, Enzo Ferrari worked with Alfa Romeo and started racing for them in local races. These races got him success along with an opportunity to race for a better competition. However, he refused the offer and continued working for Alfa Romeo before starting his own firm.

Ferrari developed cars for Alfa and managed to lay down a team of about 40 racecar drivers including himself. With the birth of his first son “Alfredo Ferrari” in the year 1932, Enzo discontinued racing. Later on, Alfa was resolved due to certain financial constraints that led Ferrari to team up with Pirelli. Race drivers of Scuderia were calibers, but Mercedes dominated the era.

By the year 1937, Alfa Romeo regained control of the racing team and Enzo was the director of sports for them. Enzo resigned soon, however a legal clause restricted him from racing or designing for four years. Ferrari started supplying parts to other racing teams. His firm was heavily involved in war production during the World War II. At the end of the Second World War Enzo started making cars bearing his name and founded Ferrari S.p.A in 1947. The firm’s first victory came in the British Grand Prix of 1951. Ferrari started selling sports car to fund its racing events. Despite the success achieved through the “Le Mans Races”, the company had heavy involvement in the Formula One Races.

FIAT took over a small percentage of stakes and increased it to 56% in the 1960’s. However, Enzo Ferrari remained the managing director till 1971. Even though, he stepped down, his brilliance still influenced the company.

On August 14 1988, the world witnessed the death of Enzo at the age of 90 in Modena. In the year 1988, the McLaren Honda team dominated the season. The team won all the races in that year. However, they failed to win the Italian grand Prix that took place just weeks after the death of Enzo Ferrari.

Before his death the “Ferrari F40″ was launched and till date is dedicated as a symbol of his achievements. In the year 2003, the first car of the company actually bearing his name was launched the “Enzo Ferrari” which again turned out to be one of the best Ferrari’s.

Bmw Takes Two on Merger

DaimlerChrysler, parent automaker of Mercedes-Benz, has already signed the papers to their corporate divorce while their strong rival BMW is planning to launch a takeover bid for Volvo earlier this year as revealed by Autocar. It can be noted that most analysts have expressed their concern over mergers in the auto industry saying that it is not pragmatic. But it looks like BMW just don’t want itself to be daunted by the number of failed mergers in the industry and preferred to personally experience it.

Anyway, the Bavarian automaker and producer of high quality BMW exhaust have already requested a complete breakdown of Volvo’s financial position from a European investment bank which is handling enquiries on behalf of Ford, the owner of Volvo. Reliable sources have also revealed that BMW has earlier eyed the Alfa Romeo as its takeover target.

According to industry experts BMW is planning to expand its range of brands to support the future growth of the company. Likewise, part of its plan is underpinning the front-wheel-drive Mini division by expanding its output and it can do so with the help of Volvo.

Why Volvo? Company bosses at BMW saw Volvo as the fitting global brand complimentary to BMW, which they deemed has considerable room for growth and room to accommodate Volvo. Although BMW will always emphasize driving pleasure, Volvo on the other hand will contribute safety and environmental concerns to the mix.

At present it not yet clear what BMW plans are but its probable that the larger saloon and estate models of Volvo just in case would be switched to BMW platforms offering both rear-and four-wheel drive. The smaller cars in the Volvo’s range would remained front-drive and would probably be merged to the Mini family expanding this model range.

The Mini brand is currently one of the biggest problems of BMW and it has already been forced to allot additional investment just for the redesigning of the new Mini as well as engineering the Mini Clubman estate. But despite all the efforts Mini sales are still down on their 2005 peak and the BMW insiders admit that a total annual output of 250,000 to 270,000 cars is just not enough to secure a profitable long-term future for the Mini brand.

Potentially with Volvo, BMW could build the proposed large five-door Mini and Mini SUV on the same front-drive chassis as the future S40 and V50. And let’s just say for the sake of argument that this was done, an annual output of 500,000 upmarket Volvo and Mini front-drive cars could ensure long-term profitability.

The expectation for future profit is not new when it comes to merger in fact every one of those failed union in the auto industry is hoping for the same thing that’s why they merge in the first place. Unfortunately, none of those merges survive except for the seven years partnership between Nissan and Renault but even their union is still uncertain and nobody knows what may happen in the future.

And let us not forget that seven years ago BMW was humiliated when it incurred massive losses which forced it to split up and sell the Rover Group which it bought in 1994. The question now is: Has BMW forgets the lessons of the past or has it learned a lot to create a new successful partnership? Well only BMW can answer that.

Have You Experienced This With Bmw?

Have You Experienced This With BMW?

After my friend Bobby Watson bought his first BMW, I remember him saying how much he enjoyed driving it. He became so enthusiastic about it that I thought for sure that he was on the BMW payroll. And to this day, I have never met anyone more excited about the BMW Brand. But the story doesn’t end here.

There is another side of BMW that Bobby made me aware of recently.

If you have the need to experience “real speed” beyond what you can do on the highway with your BMW, here is something that you need to check out. Bobby introduced me to the world of “Formula One” racing. And to my surprise, he told me that for over 50 years BMW has been associated with motor racing in one form or another. And when I thought about it, it seemed like a natural connection between BMW and “Formula One” racing.

As I found out being with Bobby, “Formula One” racing is wild. And the record books are filled with the many successes BMW has had in this sport. And it’s only right that they have achieved success because of the company’s total commitment to innovation and technology. It’s the core belief behind everything BMW.

Nobody just watches a BMW during a Formula One race.

You can’t just see it on TV or watch the cars zipping by you in the stands at the racetrack. Oh no. This is a participation sport. You go for the thrills, the excitement and the pure adrenaline “rush’ of seeing man and machine being pushed to their limits. All you have to do is ask two former BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers Sebastian Vettel and Timo Glock what it’s like to live this “on the edge” lifestyle.

And you thought that the only BMW made was what goes in your garage.

Here is something else that I would like to share with you that most BMW owners or wannabe owners don’t know. When it comes to endurance racing, BMW is definitely at the top of the food chain. Just imagine what it would feel like to be behind the wheel as your BMW, V12 LMR wins the legendary 24-Hour Le Mans race. Tell me that wouldn’t get you pumped.

Like a proud father showing off his first newborn, Bobby told me that 18 times in the Nurburgring 24-Hour Race and 21 times in the classic 24-Hour Spa –Francorchamps Race, BMW race cars have been in victory lane. Every time Bobby tells me these stats, there is a twinkle in his eye almost as if he had driven one of those BMWs to victory himself. And like all BMW enthusiasts, he never tires reliving the glory stories of past and present championships.

So don’t kid yourself.

If you own a BMW or will own one in the future, take my advice. Tell your significant other that your passion will most likely go beyond just your “street” BMW. Along with your purchase comes not only a tradition, but a lifestyle.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Porsche Bags 4th Straight Wins

As Penske drivers Ryan Briscoe and Sascha Maassen claimed the manufacturer’s fourth-straight overall win, both being second in a row, in a thrill-a-minute race around Lime Rock Park’s cramped confines, Porsche maintained its winning round in the American Le Mans Series.

With the late introduced 2007-spec LMP2 air restrictors, Porsche’s RS Spyder lost 5 percent of its engine power for this race. Nonetheless, it was still the car to have around the 1.54-mile Connecticut venue. The LMP1 Audi R10s, which was much heavier, weren’t at home on the narrow and bouncy circuit. Moreover, Porsche appeared to extend its advantage over its Acura LMP2 rivals.

The second Penske Porsche mainly led the two-hour, 45-minute race. Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard led the first two hours. But the latter was caught behind two slower cars.

After both cars went off track, the Audis ended up nowhere. Allan McNish spun twice avoiding a slower prototype. As a result, he ended up fifth overall along with co-driver Rinaldo Capello. Marco Werner crashed the other R10 massively.

Ahead of Chevrolet Corvette teammates Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen, Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin won GT1. Their winning was essentially decided when Beretta ended up 0.01 second quicker in free practice, given that overtaking between the two cars was banned, before rain that canceled qualifying.

Porsche got its first ALMS GT2 victory of the season over Ferrari. The three F430 GTs of the race came together in one incident, thus allowing the Flying Lizard Porsche of Jorg Bergmeister and Johannes van Overbeek to win the class.

Porsche is not only dedicated to building ordinary cars or Porsche 911 parts. It also indulges in racing activities.

The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) gave all drivers and teams since 1999 the probability to compete for a whole racing season with the legendary 24-hour race of Le Mans. The ALMS regulations, which are issued by IMSA (International Motor Sports Association), are based on the long-distance classic. These are the two prototypes and two GT classes drive at the same time in a single race; meaning, the spectators watch four races in one. Year after year the ALMS satisfy its fans with enthusiasm due to the presence of many notable manufacturers and prominent drivers at this very open and attractive race series. One of the many manufacturers is Porsche.

Porsche got a double champion in the 2006 season. It succeeded as the first manufacturer to win the championship title in two different classes. Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr won the manufacturer’s class, while team (Penske Motorsports) and driver titles were won in the LMP2 class. In, Jörg Bergmeister won the manufacturer’s and driver titles in the 911 GT3 RSR (996) in the GT2 class.

The 2007 racing calendar has been increased from ten to twelve races. Porsche will face this challenge with the advanced RS Spyder, 911 GT3 RSR (997) models and several top class teams, including Penske Racing, Dyson Racing, Flying Lizard, Tafel Racing and Rahal Letterman Racing.
