A Brief History of Bmw Motor Cars

The BMW story starts way back in 1913 with the formation of the Rapp-Motorenwerke company by Karl Rapp. The firm were engaged in the production of aircraft engines from a former bicycle factory located near Munich. It was close to this plant that Gustav Otto established the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG aircraft factory and in 1922 these two organisations merged to form BMW. The letters stand for: Bayerische Motoren Werke.

In their early years BMW produced mainly aircraft engines, but also some motorcycle engines. In fact the BMW badge is supposed to resemble a spinning aircraft propeller. It wasn’t until 1928 when BMW bought a car factory at Eisenach/Thuringia that BMW began producing cars. Along with the factory they bought the licence to produce a small car called the Dixi. The first cars produced by BMW at the plant were badged BMW Dixi, but the word Dixi was soon dropped. They introduced a new model called the BMW 3/15 DA-2 and the success of this car enabled them to survive the great depression.

It was in 1936 that BMW introduced the type 328 roadster which quickly became the most successful sports car of the time. The 328, designed by Fritz Fiedler, featured a number of innovative features including a stylish, aerodynamic body shape. It used an inline 6-cylinder engine which gave the car excellent performance and it was renowned for its excellent handling. The type 328 roadster accumulated a number of prestigious wins on the racing circuit and was nominated as car of the century in 1999.

BMW’s involvement in aircraft engine production during WWII led to a 3 year ban on production at the end of the war. It wasn’t until 1949 that they were able to return to production which they did with the 250cc R24 motorcycle.

It was in 1951 that BMW introduced a spacious, 6-cylinder sedan called the 501. This was followed by the 502 which featured a lightweight alloy V8 engine. Later in the 1950s they began producing the BMW 507, a lightweight, V8 propelled sports car. This was the vehicle they hoped would revive the sporting success they’d achieved with the 328 roadster. But this wasn’t to be. They were losing money on every 507 that was produced and so production stopped in 1960.

Also during the 1950s BMW bought the design and manufacturing rights to the Isetta which was to become one of the most successful microcars in the post WWII years. It was a time when cheap, short distance transportation was much needed and the 2-seater, with an economical 250cc engine, fit the requirements nicely. Manufacturing rights for the Isetta were sold to various production companies around the world and these included the British Railways works in Brighton, UK.

The 1960s saw BMW enjoying a number of notable successes including the BMW 1500 which was a 1499cc, four cylinder touring sedan introduced in 1961. This was the first of the modern BMW sports sedans. They went on to produce a series of popular sedans including the famous BMW 2002. This was a 2-door sedan that had been based upon the 4-door 1600. The 2002 was to be the forerunner of the BMW 3 series and production of this successful model continued until 1976.

By the 1970s BMW had cemented their reputation as an innovative automobile manufacturing company. The 70s saw the introduction of the 3-tier sports sedan range consisting of the 3-series, 5-series and the 7-series. Between 1970 and 1993 BMW car production quadrupled and turnover increased by 1700%.

The 1990s, after 1994, saw BMW take ownership of the British Rover Group. This was not a successful venture and in 2000 BMW disposed of Rover.

Today’s ‘beemers’ have retained their highly prestigious reputation for quality and reliability. The company are taking steps to reduce the impact they and their motor cars have upon the environment so we can expect to see more innovative and exciting developments from the motor car company who have not only survived two world wars and a massive depression, but thrived.

Three On The Trot For Ferrari In Istanbul

While Ferrari, its sponsors, fans and merchandise producers will be pleased with what was overall a successful weekend for the Italian team, one thing may worry them; that is the new found pace and competitiveness of the McLaren. Istanbul saw an exciting race weekend that will do much for the sport. Felipe Massa stamped his authority on a track that he claims “he owns”. After qualifying in pole with what was an outstanding lap, he converted his qualifying position in to a race win, a hat trick for Massa who has one the previous two Turkish GPs. The Brazilian’s record here will impress his team sponsors merchandise producers but most of all, his fans.

Unfortunately for Ferrari, current world champion and leader Kimi Raikkonen failed to overtake his McLaren rival, Lewis Hamilton. Massa dominated for Ferrari during the entire race however, apart from a bold overtaking procedure in the twenty fourth lap that saw the Brit take the lead. The move proved to irrelevant ultimately though as Hamilton was running a three stop strategy rather than the more uniform two stops that the majority of the pack embarked upon. Subsequently, due to this difference in strategies, Massa really didn’t have much to worry about for the entire race.

Raikkonen had more difficulties however, after a collision heading into turn one with McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen, his front wing was damaged, something that hindered his race for the remaining laps. Ferrari bosses, sponsors and merchandise suppliers will hope that Istanbul was just a blip for Raikkonen who will be hoping to keep his world championship title. Ultimately, the difference between McLaren and Ferrari boiled down to tyre and strategy selection, while Ferrari had the distinct advantage of using the soft tyre compound from the outset, McLaren used the slower harder tyre. The difference was minimal however; seemingly it was only Hamilton who opted for this strategy as he found the going easier on the harder tyre compound; his renegade tactics almost secured him a win, but in reality, Ferrari were once again, too good.

Hamilton however proved his effectiveness as a racer. Despite not being able to take pole in qualifying, his efforts during the race, on a different pit strategy to everyone else, were described by some as the best of his career. His second place finish will give heart to the legions of fans, sponsors and merchandise companies who back the young Brit. The McLaren computer had estimated that the best position Hamilton could have placed was fifth, proving that the computer cannot always account for exceptional driving performances and the events of a race. Ferrari will be hoping that both their drivers and cars will have something left in reserve that will give them the edge once the procession moves to Monaco.

Of the other teams, BMW Sauber probably did the best with fourth and fifth finishes, keeping them ahead of McLaren and behind Ferrari in the constructor standings. Kubica will be disappointed however that he could not have placed higher. Fernando Alonso once again proved his racing pedigree by finishing in sixth, a finish that will please his army of Spanish merchandise suppliers, sponsors and fans. Even Red Bull managed to finish in the points with Australian Mark Webber placing seventh, although plucky Scotsman David Coulthard blamed under-steer and pit stops for a disappointing tenth.

Overall, while the Istanbul GP will be remembered for an outstanding third successive win by Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, what will be more memorable for Formula 1 commentators will be the new found pace of the McLaren. As the procession moves to Monaco, always one of the most exciting races of the season, all eyes will be on McLaren to see whether they can build on the impressive Turkish performance and secure a race win over the dominant Ferrari team.

Economical New Cars That Achieve Over Fifty Miles Per Gallon in the UK

Using the words of Bob Dylan, “Times, they are a changing” and this is certainly true when we look at the habits of the new car buyer. Successive governments have failed to curb our excessive fuel demands, indeed, for many years cars just seemed to get bigger and bigger, with fuel consumption figures dropping, sometimes barely hitting double figures. Then came the troubles in the oil producing regions of the world, swiftly followed by the credit crunch and all of a sudden attitudes have changed. Market forces have influenced the new car buyer and as a result, the car manufacturers have moved swiftly to fill the chasm that is opening in the marketplace, the need for comfortable, but fuel efficient new cars. Listed below are ten economical new cars, not in any particular order, or indeed, not even market leaders, what they do have in common though is their ability to travel over fifty miles per gallon on the combined cycle. They may not be the answer to all our problems, buy they are certainly a step in the right direction.

MINI Cooper 1.6 D

The 1.6 diesel MINI Cooper has had the EfficientDynamics treatment by BMW, low rolling resistance tyres, electric power steering, an intelligent alternator control / brake energy regeneration system, an automatic stop-start function and a high precision Direct Injection system are amongst the advances that have been applied to the new diesel Cooper and as a result it achieves a staggering 72.4 miles per gallon on the combined cycle.

Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion

Powered by a 1.4 litre, three cylinder, diesel engine that is fitted with a with a variable-geometry turbocharger that gives maximum assistance at low speeds, the Polo Bluemotion is one of the leaders in its class. Volkswagen have used a few tricks to get the Polo Bluemotion to perform as frugally as it does, the obligatory low-rolling-resistance tyres, lightweight alloy wheels and improved aerodynamics all contribute to the Bluemotion achieving 74.3 miles per gallon on the combined cycle. Exhaust gas recirculation and a particulate filter give the Polo another advantage over most cars in the UK market, Co2 emissions of only 99g/km, resulting in zero road tax. Low cost motoring at its best.

Audi A3 1.9 TDIe

Audi may not be the first manufacturer that comes to mind when it comes to economical cars, but this just goes to show how serious manufacturers are now taking the situation we find ourselves in. The A3 1.9 TDIe is powered by a reworked diesel unit and this combined with aerodynamic tweaks, low-resistance tyres and a ‘recommended gear’ display mean the Audi will travel 62.8 miles for every gallon on the combined cycle. So, if you you’re looking for a car with green credentials, but don’t want to compromise on quality, the A3 1.9 TDIe may tick all the boxes you require.

Citroen C1 1.0i Vibe 3 door

The Citroen C1 could just as easily be substituted with the Peugeot 107 or the Toyota Aygo as they all share the same platforms and the same engines, that said the C1 was chosen for one thing and one thing alone, price. Designed in collaboration between the three manufacturers, all are extremely capable city cars with low road fund bandings and good mpg figures, slight cosmetic differences are really the only things that set the models apart, that and the fact that Citroen run slightly better offers making them the lowest priced model. Powered by a one litre petrol engine the C1 will return 61.8 miles per gallon on the combined cycle and has Co2 emissions of 108 g/km.

New BMW 1 Series 118d EfficientDynamics

Voted World green car of the year in 2008 by 47 journalists from 24 different countries, the BMW 118d EfficientDynamics makes use of energy capture systems, brake energy regeneration, auto stop-start, optimum gear-shift change indicators, electric power steering and lightweight body panels to achieve a quite remarkable 62.8 miles per gallon on the combined cycle. With BMW expecting sales of 700,000 cars a year in Europe that have EfficientDynamics incorporated, the fuel savings are estimated to be in the region of 33 million gallons, quite a substantial saving by anyone’s book

Ford Fiesta ECOnetic

When it comes to economical new cars the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic has to be up there with the best of them. Powered by a specially tuned 1.6 litre diesel engine the Fiesta ECOnetic is the most economical Ford and possibly the most economical car around at the moment. Longer gear ratio’s, a gear change indicator, aerodynamic wheel trims, low rolling resistance tyres, lowered suspension and the fact that it weighs about 40 kgs less than the outgoing Fiesta mean that the ECOnetic will let you drive 76.3 miles on the combined cycle for every gallon of diesel you put in. Ford may be struggling in the US, but with figures like these the Fiesta ECOnetic it sure to prove a big hit in Europe.

Volkswagen Touran 1.9 TDI DPF BlueMotion S 105 5dr

Unfortunately not everybody can utilise a small city car or hatchback, after all some people do have families and this obviously restricts their choice when it comes to buying a new car. For those in that position, Volkswagen has come to the rescue in the form of the Touran Bluemotion. The Extremely popular MPV sports a new front grille and air intake, optimised aerodynamics, lower suspension and higher gearing along with low rolling resistance tyres, combined, these improvements mean that the Touran Bluemotion will return 52.3 miles per gallon on the combined cycle. Proving you don’t necessarily have to downsize to do your little bit.

New Toyota Prius 1.5 VVT-i

When launched, the Toyota Prius was seen by many as just a gimmick, as a result both Lexus and its parent company, Toyota, have stolen a bit of a march over their competitors. Exemption from the London congestion charge has certainly helped to raise the profile of the Prius and as a result it has become a common sight on the roads throughout the UK. Powered by a 1.5 litre petrol engine and a high output electric motor the Prius switches between the two, the electric motor takes charge at low speeds (up to 28 mph), with the petrol engine taking the strain at higher speeds. The result, a combined cycle of 65.7 miles per gallon, making the Toyota Prius an ideal car not only for the city, but also for those who choose to commute.

Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI PD 80 GreenLine

Another offering from the Volkswagen stable to take a trip down to the wind tunnel is the Skoda Fabia Greenline, it may not quite match up to the Polo Bluemotion or the Seat Ibiza Ecomotive, it is however, quite a bit more frugal than the rest of the Fabia range. Achieving 68.9 miles per gallon on the combined cycle, the Greenline should theoretically drive 689 miles on a full tank, put into perspective, that’s seventy miles more than a standard Fabia 1.4 TDI. The Greenline may cost a little more than its siblings, but with petrol and diesel prices as they are, it won’t take very long before you’ve recouped the cash.

New Mazda 2 1.3 TS

Generally, as we get older, we add weight, something that also seems to happen to cars. Redesigns and facelifts always seem to add a few pounds here and there and as a result larger, more powerful engines are required just to achieve the same performance. Not so with the new Mazda 2. When Mazda launched the new 2 model it weighed in an incredible 100 kgs lighter than the model it replaced. It’s safer (five stars from EuroNCAP for adult occupants), has more equipment as standard, yet still manages 52.3 miles per gallon on the combined cycle, quite an achievement really.

If you are in the market for a new car make sure you look at economical cars that get more than fifty miles per gallon and green cars.

A Look Under The Hood At The Bmw Parts That Transform A Car Into A Driving Machine

Known for its impressive engineering and dynamic performance, the BMW has made its mark on the automotive industry. There are specific characteristics that make a BMW one of a kind. These are standard BMW elements that cannot be found on other cars.

One of the most distinguishing BMW parts is the double kidney grilles. This stylish grille sets the BMW apart from other cars, giving it a handsome finish as it glides down the highway. The double kidney grilles also give the BMW optimal cooling, allowing air to reach the internal parts. This improves performance and reduces wear and tear on the interior parts.

Another one of the outstanding BMW parts is the four headlight setup. These provide optimal lighting no matter the driving terrain, as well as an eye catching display. It is readily apparent that when four headlights are coupled with double kidney grilles that a classic BMW is on the road.

Handling and Safety

There are additional BMW parts that are not as obvious to the naked eye that create the unique driving conditions that BMW cars are known best for. BMW engines are finely tuned to deliver smooth yet powerful handling under any conditions. Owners know that the BMW is more than a reliable vehicle – owning a BMW is a way of life.

Oem Bmw Parts Vs. Aftermarket Bmw Auto Parts

If you own a BMW chances are you have scoured the internet searching for great deals on BMW parts and accessories. Who can blame you? BMW’s are infamous for their great handling, but with great handling comes the associated wear and tear of the suspension and steering parts (ie BMW control arms and thrust arms). When these parts begin to wear, its not surprising when you get an outrageous quote from a dealership for hundreds, if not several thousands of dollars to replace these steering and suspension parts. I’m just using BMW control arms as an example, but its across the board for any European cars such as Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, and Volkswagen.

You have now made a decision to do your own due diligence and attempt to source the parts outside of a dealership to save you a little bit of money. You will quickly become overwhelmed by the amount of company’s brands and products to choose from and may be confused by the jargon used in the aftermarket and OEM parts industry. Terms such as genuine, aftermarket, OEM, OES, and OEA. I will end all of this confusion right here and right now.

Genuine BMW Parts: Genuine BMW parts come in Genuine BMW packaging. Plain and simple. If its not in a Genuine BMW box, or has a BMW stamp on it, it is not considered a Genuine BMW Part. Keep in mind BMW does not actually manufacture these parts, they are subcontracted to companies that manufacture the specific product. The company that manufactures the particular part for BMW is called the Original Equipment Manufacturer.

OEM BMW Parts: OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. It is essentially the same product as a Genuine BMW Part, however the manufacturer has sold the product in their own packaging instead of sending it directly to BMW to be packaged under the BMW name.

OEA/ OES BMW Parts: Stands for either Original Equipment Aftermarket or Original equipment supplier. A company may manufacture genuine parts for Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes, or other car maker, but if they have never manufactured a part for BMW, they will never be considered a genuine BMW part or OEM BMW part.

Aftermarket BMW Part: An aftermarket BMW part is manufactured by a company that has never been contracted by a major car maker to be their Original Equipment manufacturer. Although the company has never been contracted by a major auto maker, the parts are made to fit and perform as well as the OEM since they are generally produced with the same materials and machinery.

Our purpose here is not to be deceitful. As you move down the chain, the instances of coming across a BMW part that is inferior in quality will increase. Now that you are an educated consumer you can use this information along with checking the warranty policy and credentials of the company to make the best decision along the way.

BMW HEADLIGHTS: ENLIGHTING ROADS

The users have given a reputation to BMW for giving ultimate driving experiences. It gives the owner of a BMW a great pride to drive. Its meticulous engineered response combined with precision and agility to commands is given to it by the person behind the wheels, thus making it a remarkable car. Because of its performance, the brand was eventually titled as “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” It is BMW’s standard quality that provides drivers the ease and comfort that all car consumers dream of.

BMW vehicles have a very distinctive design. Keeping the superb quality of these BMW vehicles in consideration, they are also designed along classic lines that give them a timeless look. The people in BMW know that although looks may withstand the test of time, some BMW interior parts will eventually wear down with constant use. For this reason, BMW interior parts are available in the market. These parts are made to match the specifications of one’s BMW car unit. These parts are especially made to meet the needs of a particular BMW vehicle. Thus, one can expect replacement BMW interior parts to perform as ably and competently as one’s old BMW part.

To make sure that BMW vehicle owners can enjoy the full benefit of having a BMW even as time goes by, BMW’s various interior parts are out in the market available for all BMW vehicles, such as the alternator, antenna, belts, body parts, brakes, brake pads, catalytic converter, clutch, air filter, cold air intake, control arm, engine parts, fuel pump, exhaust, fog lights, grille, , ball joint, head gasket, headlights, muffler, oil filter, oil pump, radiator, shocks, spark plugs, starter, oxygen sensor, struts, timing chain, taillights, thermostat, timing belt, turn signal and water pump.

Groundbreaking engineering and mechanical technologies have been employed by BMW in the manufacture of its automobiles. Due to its vehicles design, it provides optimum performance, but aside from that, safety measures are carefully kept in view as an integral part of the overall structure and design of BMW units. In this regard, every BMW vehicle is equipped with a complete lighting system. The BMW headlights, tail lights, corner lights and side lights are the one of its own kind in lighting system that has proven to improve road visibility for the vehicle driver which also enables him/her to communicate with other drivers on the road.

The BMW headlights are the most basic. Among all the components of the vehicles lighting system, these headlights lamps are positioned at the front end of the vehicle where by illuminating the road ahead for the driver helps in keeping the road view clear. During the day, headlights are of great use in maneuvering across foggy roads. During the night, it not only illuminates the road, it also serves as a signal to other drivers, of the vehicle’s presence. Through this, headlights prevent accidents which could sometimes be fatal especially at the curvy roads of the mountains.

BMW headlights are combinations of multiple lamps and reflectors. These lights are capable to be switched between two configurations: low beams and high beams. By shifting the BMW headlights to high beams drivers are allowed to have more light at a higher angle, causing the person at the wheels to be able to see farther. However, the high beams dazzling glare may be flattering to most of the drivers. But, low beams should be used during normal visibility conditions to avoid mishaps, the drivers could face when he is coming from the opposite directions.

Although BMW has used the material in the manufacturing of the headlights which could last long, the environmental changes may affect its life span. Some factors like changes in the weather can do damage to it, because these weather changes cause temperatures to rise and fall. This causes moisture to develop and collect inside the headlight assemblies and on the inner surface of the lens. This could be compromising with the beam pattern and may even turn out to temper the headlight’s electrical connections. So
BMW headlight users are cautioned to keep an extra pair with them.

So have a nice brighter, stylish and most beneficial drive at the most inconvenient driving conditions with BMW headlights, a brand name on which you can relay for your whole life.
